A Glass of Milk

I was browsing the internet on my laptop when I came across a site that caught my attention undividedly. I happened to read one story that is so heart-warming and faith strengthening, and I decided to share it with you. I hope that you will learn the significance and the moral of the story. I also hope that you will do the deed and not just simply read and understand it.

There was a little boy who worked as a street vendor selling newspaper. One night, he was very hungry and found out he had a dime left in his pocket. It was not enough to buy him a food. As he was very hungry, he decided to go to his neighbour’s house to ask for food. When he rang the doorbell, he was surprised to see a very beautiful lady who was 10 years older than him opening the door. Because of that, he was a bit ashamed and embarrassed to ask for food. Instead, he politely asked for a glass of water. With that being said, the lady asked him to wait for her. When she returned, she handed him a glass of milk instead as she noticed the boy to be very hungry. The boy, after finishing the milk, offered his dime to the lady as his payment. She politely refused it as she was taught by her mother not to ask payment for a simple kindness to others. The boy not only felt invigorated by the milk but his faith was strengthened by the little act of kindness.

Many years passed by and he became successful. He graduated with honors and was one of the best doctors in the country. He was a specialist and was known to be DR. HOWARD KELLY, the brain of the medicine.

On the other side of the country, there was one lady who was very ill. She was rushed by her daughter to a nearby hospital. She was diagnosed to have a very rare condition that required constant medical attention and surgery. A specialist was called to attend to her condition in the person of Dr. Howard Kelly. The moment Dr. Howard Kelly entered her room, he was familiarized by her face. She was the same lady who offered him the glass of milk years back. With that, he devoted his time in studying the cure of the lady’s disease. After a couple of months, the lady was starting to get well. Until she was free of her illness.

A time came where the lady had to leave the hospital and she was very anxious and worried to see the hospital bill for she was very sure to receive a sky rocketing bill! She did not know where to get the money to pay her dues. She definitely knew that it will take her a lifetime to pay the ever expensive bill.

She was even more tensed when she heard the door opening. A nurse came in and handed her the hospital bill. She was shaken to see the bill as it was worth her life. One thing, though, caught her attention that made her cry her hearts out! Under the bill was a note that said:

“PAID IN FULL BY ONE GLASS OF MILK! – DR. HOWARD KELLY”

She was so relieved and uttered a prayer to herself. She thanked the Lord for what was done to her. Dr. Howard Kelly went in and hugged her tightly. Tears flooded both their eyes. Later that day, Dr. Howard Kelly accompanied the lady to her house and promised her to attend to her medical and financial needs as long as he lived.
